About Counselling #01

What is Counselling?

Most of us have times in our life when we need help and support. Life can sometimes seem very complicated and confusing. Perhaps we are depressed and nothing seems to make us feel any better. We may find that coping strategies which have served us up to now are no longer working and we just can't go on the way we are.

Counselling provides someone to
  • Listen to you
  • Give time, space and total acceptance
  • Help you to help yourself
  • Help you to explore your thoughts and feelings
  • Support and encourage you to solve and manage your problems
  • Help you to face your anxieties
  • Help you to let go of the past.

By listening attentively and patiently the counsellor can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client's point of view and can help them see things more clearly, possibly from a different perspective. Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change or of reducing confusion. It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action.

    Theoretical Approach

My core model is person-centred. This stems from the work of Carl Rogers, and is based on the principle that we are all capable of personal growth and expressing our inate potential, and that we are all in the process of becoming the person we want to be. Sometimes that process can be facilitated by counselling.

I also integrate various effective skills and approaches including Brief-solution focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioural therapy, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt according to need.

I believe that all of us have the ability to help ourselves, provide our own answers to our questions and solve our own problems. This can be done by increasing our self understanding and personal awareness by looking deep inside us at our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and values.
